Radiation therapy uses high doses of radiation to kill the cancer cells in a given area.  This procedure works well with a specific area of malignant cells, but renders ineffective the adjacent cells.  The aim is to decrease the size of the tumor.

Mesothelioma Treatment - Surgery

Doctors will perform a biopsy to determine exactly where the mesothelioma is and what stage it has reached.  There are two different types of biopsies, one of which is more intrusive to the body then the other.  Some biopsies can be done with a needle but others include surgery.  Surgery allows the doctor to remove tissue that will then be used in a biopsy.

After being diagnosed with mesothelioma, you need to consult with your doctor and the medical staff to determine which mesothelioma treatment plan would be optimal for you.  Your doctor may recommend a plan of treatment that combines two or three of the different treatment options available.  The doctor will factor in how big the tumor is, where it is located, your current health condition, your age, your medical history and even your attitude to make this determination.
